French[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old French fraye (fry, spawn), related to frayer. Cognate to Italian frega, fregolo, fregola (fry, spawn), Spanish freza (fry, spawn). The similarity to English fry and its Germanic family is a coincidence.
