From Proto-Albanian *griδ-(ati-), from Proto-Indo-European *gwr-edh- (to cry, shout). Enlarged formation with the suffix -as/t. Cognate to Lithuanian ger̃das (clamor), gar̃sas (clangor), Old Prussian gerdaut (say).
