Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Going by the spelling, from an underlying Arabic *عَمّاق (*ʕammāq), which would seem to be an intensive form of عَمِيق (ʕamīq, deep). However, given the vocalic mergers involving and q in Maltese, the root would have been liable to irregular developments. Compare għamieq (depth) for more.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /amˈmɪːʔ/
  • IPA(key): /aˤːmˈmɪːʔ/ (archaic)

Adjective[edit]

għammieq (feminine singular għammieqa, plural għammieqa)

  1. (literary) deep
