Etymology[edit]

From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ (ʕala r-rīqi, on an empty stomach). Equivalent to għal (on) +‎ ir-riq (the saliva), literally on the saliva. Compare Moroccan Arabic عالريق (ʕar-rīq) and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق (ʕar-rāyeʔ).
