Probably from Old High German agaza (“magpie”), from Proto-Germanic *agatjō (“magpie”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (“sharp, pointed”). Compare Occitan agaça/gacha, French agace, and possibly Catalan garsa.
