Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch gerijf, gerief. Possibly derived from Middle Dutch rive, rieve (abundant, mild) with the prefix ge-, from uncertain origin. Possibly ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rībaz (generous, abundant) and related to Lithuanian riebus (fat).
