Etymology[edit]
Sino-Vietnamese word from 減 (“to decrease; to subtract”). This word only means "to decrease" in Vietnamese. For "to substract", use trừ instead.

Usage notes[edit]
Syntactically similar to English decrease in terms of transitivity. A number or amount can giảm (“decrease”) by itself, or be decreased by something or someone.
