Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Compound of golf (wave) +‎ breker (breaker).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈɣɔlfˌbreː.kər/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: golf‧bre‧ker

Noun[edit]

golfbreker m (plural golfbrekers, diminutive golfbrekertje n)

  1. breakwater
Synonyms: (archaic, rare) breekwater, (archaic, rare) zeebreker
  2. (proscribed) transversal dam built on a sandbeach to slow its erosion
    Synonyms: strandhoofd, havenhoofd

Usage notes[edit]

The sense dam transversal to the shoreline is proscribed as a transversal dam does not protect the shore against the oncoming waves (i.e. does not break the waves), unlike a breakwater which is a dam parallel to the shoreline.
