Bavarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *grainōn, from Proto-Germanic *grainōną (to howl; weep), from Proto-Germanic *grīnaną (to whine; howl; whimper), whence also English groan. Alternatively from Proto-West Germanic *grīnan (to snarl; to grin) from the same source, whence modern greina (to cry, to whine) and German greinen (to cry, to whine).
