From Proto-Celtic *widukʷēslā (literally “wood intelligence”). By surface analysis, gwez (“trees”) + poell (“logic”). Compare Cornish gwydhbol, Irish ficheall, Scottish Gaelic fidhcheall, and Welsh gwyddbwyll.
