hamamelid (plural hamamelids)

  1. (botany) Any member of a grouping Hamamelididae used in analyses of flowering plant phylogeny toward the end of the twentieth century. It included a number of dicot families that have since been shown to be parts of other groups.

  • The normal rules for derivation of taxonomic names would produce hamamelidid, but this is an informal name that doesn't have to follow the rules.
