From Proto-West Germanic *halhuk, equivalent to healh +‎ -oc. Cognate with Middle Low German hallik (cavity, hollow space between a kiln and oven). Compare also Middle Low German hallig, hallich, halg, halch (land beyond or unprotected by a dike, low-lying island).
