Unadapted borrowing from Ancient Greek (ῐ̔́ππος) ἑταιρῐκή ((híppos) hetairikḗ, (horse) guards), from ἑταῖρος (hetaîros, comrade, companion) +‎ -ῐκός (-ikós, -ic, adjectival suffix).
