Vietnamese[edit]
Etymology[edit]
hiệp (“round”) + phụ (“secondary”), literally “secondary round”. hiệp can be translated as "half", but it means "round" or "game" in general because not every sport match consists of only two games (thus "halves") like soccer.
Pronunciation[edit]
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [hiəp̚˧˨ʔ fu˧˨ʔ]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [hiəp̚˨˩ʔ fʊw˨˩ʔ]
- (Hồ Chí Minh City) IPA(key): [hip̚˨˩˨ fʊw˨˩˨]
Noun[edit]
- (sports) a game of overtime/extra time
Usage notes[edit]
If a match extends to extra time, the main games may be dubbed hiệp chính (literally “primary rounds”) as the opposite.
