From Proto-Semitic *ʕiṣ́- (tree). Cognate with Arabic عِضّ (ʕiḍḍ, thorny trees, shrubs), عُضّ (ʕuḍḍ, thick coarse trees) and Biblical Hebrew עֵץ (ʕeṣ, tree, wood).
