Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *(a)iˀskāˀtei; compare Latvian iẽskât (to search for lice), Proto-Slavic *jьskàti (to look for). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂i-sḱé-ti, the present of *h₂eys- (to wish, desire). Cognates include Proto-West Germanic *aiskōn (to demand, question, claim), Sanskrit इच्छति (iccháti, to wish, strive for), Old Armenian այց (aycʻ, to visit, search), Latin aeruscō (to beg, ask for).
