Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old French immeuble/immoble, borrowed from Latin immobilis (that which is immovable) but adapted to the ending of meuble (furniture), inherited from the Latin antonym mobilis (that which is movable). The two terms constituted a recurrent pair in juridical Latin. Doublet of immobile.
