Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Oceanic *panako. Blust describes reconstruction of the earlier form of the word as "exceptionally complicated", but suggests an original Proto-Austronesian *Cakaw. Cognate with Maori whānako/whēnako and Fijian butako.
