From Proto-Bahnaric *ɟrlaː (thorn), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟlaʔ (thorn); cognate with Halang jơla, Khmer បន្លា (bɑnlaa) and Old Mon jirla (thorn) (modern Mon ဓလ (həlɛ̀ˀ, thorn).
