Etymology[edit]

From Malay jangkar, probably from Classical Persian لنگر (langar, anchor), probably from Ancient Greek ἄγκυρα (ánkura), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enk- (corner, hirn). Doublet of angker, anjar, anjer, and anjir.
