From Proto-Bahnaric *dəw, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *duuʔ. Cognate with Alak daduː, Sedang kơtau, Temiar dok (to escape, to run away), Khmu duʔ ("to run away, to escape"), Old Mon dow (whence Modern Mon ဒဴ (tɛ̀a, to run away, to stray)).
