Etymology[edit]

From Western European languages (compare English camera, German Kamera, Italian camera), all ultimately clippings of New Latin camera obscūra (literally dark chamber), from Latin camera, from Ancient Greek καμάρα (kamára, anything with an arched cover). Doublet of ĉambro and kamero.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [kameˈrao]
  • Audio:
    (file)
  • Rhymes: -ao
  • Hyphenation: ka‧me‧ra‧o

Noun[edit]

kamerao (accusative singular kameraon, plural kameraoj, accusative plural kameraojn)

  1. video camera, camcorder

Usage notes[edit]

Unlike in English, kamerao is not as generally usable as camera; fotilo and fotografilo are used to refer to a photography camera. Kamerao only refers to a camera that is capable of recording videos.
