From Middle Dutch cauwe, from Old Dutch *kāwa, from Proto-West Germanic *kahu (compare West Frisian ka), from Proto-Indo-European *gewH- (“to call, cry”) (compare Lithuanian giedóti, Tocharian A kāk (“he calls upon”), Sanskrit गायति (gāyati)).
