Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German kräwel, from Old High German chrowilla, chrawil, chrewil, a diminutive of *chrawa, from Proto-Germanic *krawa- (“claw”). Cognate with dialectal German Kräuel (“hook, scraper”), as well as Middle Low German krouwel, kruwel, Dutch kraauwel, Old Frisian krâwel. This etymology is incomplete.
