From Middle High German kräwel, from Old High German chrowilla, chrawil, chrewil, a diminutive of *chrawa, from Proto-Germanic *krawa- (claw). Cognate with dialectal German Kräuel (hook, scraper), as well as Middle Low German krouwel, kruwel, Dutch kraauwel, Old Frisian krâwel. This etymology is incomplete.
