From kon- (“to be put down”) + -u (deverbal nominal suffix), a calque of Arabic مَوْضُوع (mawḍūʕ, “that which is laid down”), itself a calque of Ancient Greek ὑποκείμενον (hupokeímenon, “that which is laid down”).
