Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kropľa (from older *kropja), derived from Proto-Slavic *kropiti + deverbal suffix *-ja. This is one of the few examples of native words with an epenthetic -l- (*pj > *pľ) inserted into the final syllable.
