Borrowed and clipped from Middle Low German (büssen)krūt, (bussen)krût (gunpowder), from büsse (rifle) +‎ krût (spice, herb), from Old Saxon krūd, from Proto-West Germanic *krūd (herb, plant). For the first element see Proto-West Germanic *buhsā.
