From Old Norse lævíss, equivalent to +‎ vís. First element identical to Gothic 𐌻𐌴𐍅 (lēw, occasion, opportunity) and further cognate with Gothic 𐌻𐌴𐍅𐌾𐌰𐌽 (lēwjan, to betray), Old English lǣwan (to betray).
