From earlier glíkr, from Proto-Germanic *galīkaz, whence also Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃 (galeiks), Old English ġelīc, Old High German gilīh. Compare gnógr, nógr (enough) for another word which in early texts retained g- from Proto-Germanic *ga-.
