From Proto-Germanic *hleuþą (sound), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew-to-, derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *ḱlew- (hear). Cognate with Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌹𐌿𐌸 (hliuþ).
