From Middle High German leichen (to jump, rise, mate, spawn). Despite the late attestation (14th c.) plausibly inherited from Proto-West Germanic *laikan (to jump, play). Alternatively denominal from Middle High German leich. Equivalent to Laich +‎ -en.
