Etymology[edit]
From Arabic لَقَب (laqab) with irregular -m for -b; possibly by association with unrelated laqqam (“to graft”), as if the new name were “engrafted” onto the person. Compare Moroccan Arabic لقن (laqqan, “to call someone by their last name”).
