From Proto-West Germanic *laggjan, from Proto-Germanic *lagjaną. Cognate with Old English leċġan, Old Frisian ledza, Old High German leggen, Old Norse leggja, Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (lagjan).
