From Middle Low German lucht, luft (air, smell), from Old Saxon luft, from Proto-West Germanic *luftu, from Proto-Germanic *luftuz.

Cognate with German Luft (air) and Old Norse loft (attic, air) (whence Danish loft (attic)). Danish luft (air) is borrowed from the older form of the Low German word.
