From Proto-Algonquian *ma·nθehsi (flint, knife). Cognate with Munsee máhlus (flint), Mi'kmaq mals, Unami mahëlës (flint stone),Massachusett môhshipsq (flint stone), Fox mâtethi (knife), Shawnee maanehθi (knife), Miami maalhsi (knife).
