Alteration (influenced by mata (shrub)) of earlier batafaluga, from (a)batafalua, borrowed from Arabic الْحَبَّةْ الْحُلْوَة (al-ḥabbat al-ḥulwa, the sweet grain), from حَبَّة (ḥabba, grain) and حُلْو (ḥulw, sweet).
