Tagalog[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From may +‎ sayad.

Pronunciation[edit]

Adjective[edit]

may sayad (Baybayin spelling ᜋᜌ᜔ ᜐᜌᜇ᜔)

  1. (offensive) retarded; having mental retardation
Synonyms: may pahid, may saltik, baliw, abno, ulaga, usbaw, tungaw, mongoloid
    • 2003, Ani: Literary Journal of the Cultural Center of the Philippines:
"May sayad yata sa utak 'yung babae, nakuha pa 'kong ngitian," medyo kalmado na nitong salita. Muli akong tumingin sa labas ng bintana. Nakangiting pinagmasdan ko ang labas.
"That woman's apparently a retard, [because] she even knew to smile at me", he said rather calmly. I looked again outside the window. I'm smiling observing what's outside.
    • 2008, Josel Nicolas, Palalim nang palalim, padilim nang padilim at iba pang kuwento ng lagim:
Sari-saring tsismis ang kumakalat tungkol kay Aling Valen. Kesyo iniwan daw ito ng asawa at ipinagpalit sa ibang babae o di kaya'y may sayad daw ito sa utak, at kung anu-ano pa. Pero wala kang makukuha ni anumang reaksiyon mula rito.
There are numerous rumors about Mother Valen. They even said her wife left her and exchanged her for another woman, if not, they say she is mentally retarded, and a lot more. But you can't get any reactions from here.

Usage notes[edit]

  • As persons with mental disorders are socially stigmatized in the Philippines, this is considered offensive.
