Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Latin mediam noctem, accusative of nox (night). Compare Italian mezzanotte, Aromanian njadzã-noapti, Istriot miezanuotto, Romansch mesanotg. Was the traditional word for "north", but was replaced by nord.
