From milk +‎ shed, by analogy with watershed.

  1. (agriculture, economics) A region producing milk that may be supplied to the area of demand with practical (competitively advantageous) speed and cost of transport.
    Counties adjoining a large city tended to supply most of its milk before highway and trucking improvements broadened the milkshed.
