Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ملی (millî, pertaining to a religion, sect, community, or nation; religious, national), from Arabic مِلِّيّ (milliyy, of or relating to a religious community). By surface analysis, millet (nation) +‎ -i (nisba suffix).
