From Proto-Tai *ʰnaŋᴬ (skin). Cognate with Thai หนัง (nǎng), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨶᩢᨦ, Lao ໜັງ (nang), ᦐᧂ (ṅang), Tai Dam ꪘꪰꪉ, Shan ၼင် (nǎng), Aiton ꩫင် (naṅ).
