Related to nifl (“darkness”), and to the German Nebel (“fog”) (Old High German nebul) and Dutch nevel (“fog”), from Proto-Indo-European *nébʰos ( > Ancient Greek νεφέλη (nephélē, “cloud, mist”), Latin nebula (“mist, fog”)).
