Spanish[edit]
Interjection[edit]
- they shall not pass (expressing determination to defend a position)
- “The reactionary bloc has failed. There are more Spaniards who want Spain to move forward and so it will continue to be,” shouted a euphoric Pedro Sánchez as the rank and file of the PSOE shouted “They shall not pass!” at the door of their headquarters.
Usage notes[edit]
In Spain it was used as a Republican slogan during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), and is still associated with leftist politics and antifascism.
