Cognate with Dagbani nyini, Mbelime nìǹdè, Gourmanchéma ñinli, Farefare yẽnnɛ, Moore yẽnde, Hanga nyinni, Mampruli nyinni, Kusaal nyina, Moba nyinn, Ntcham dinyindi. Related to Fula nyiindere and Serer ñiiñ, probably through a common Proto-Atlantic origin. Possibly from Proto-Niger-Congo, cognate with Proto-Bantu *ìjínò.
