From Old Frisian ōfnia, ōvenia, iterative of ēwa, jōwa, from Proto-West Germanic *ōbijan, from Proto-Germanic *ōbijaną. Cognates include Dutch oefenen, German üben. Related also to Old English efnan (to perform).
