Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *nuh₂-eh₂, verbal stem of *neh₂w- (to die, lack), the same source as naut- (to die). Cognate with Tocharian A nwām (sick), Welsh newyn (hunger), Old Irish núna (famine), etc.
