Etymology[edit]

From Contraction of owíwo. The existence of o- and e- prefixes is a remnant of an ancient Volta-Congo noun-class system. See Ede Nago oówó, proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruba *e-ɣíɣo, *o-ɣíɣo, ultimately from Proto-Edekiri *e-ɣíɣo, *o-ɣíɣo
