Yoruba[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

Compare with Olukumi órúkọ, Ifè ɛ́kọ, and possibly Igala ódú, proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ó-ɗú. Likely ultimately Westerman's reconstruction to Proto-Volta-Congo *-ni, with a possible transition from /d/ to /r/ (unclear if this r is still the /ɾ/ flap/tap used in modern Yoruba). See reconstructed Proto-Yoruboid form for more cognates
