From Old Galician-Portuguese ovelha, from Latin ovicula (little sheep), diminutive of ovis (sheep), from Proto-Italic *owis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ówis or *h₃éwis (sheep). Compare Galician ovella, Mirandese oubeilha, Spanish oveja.
