Borrowed from Malay periksa, from Sanskrit परीक्षा (parīkṣā, inspection, investigation, examination, test), from परि- (pari-) ("prefix meaning “around”) + ईक्ष (īkṣa, to see). Later evolved to be pa- +‎ ligsa.
